Tax Planning

Tax planning does not have to be as dreadful as some people will have you believe, if you know how to plan and what to consider when planning for your taxes. This is probably one of the most important and consistent financial issues you will face. It is a good idea to stay abreast of your tax obligations and responsibilities. Even if you retain a tax professional you should have some understanding of how the tax code works, for your knowledge and benefit. Whether you are an individual tax payer or business owner, a tax professional has the knowledge and experience to make the task as beneficial for you as possible.

Tax planning is method of analyzing your tax options so as to establish a program that can help you save the most money while meeting all the tax obligations you need to meet. The tax laws are designed to allow you to take all the necessary steps to make sure you are paying the minimum amount of taxes that you are responsible for within the legally established limits. It is perfectly legal to find the tax method that saves you the most money.

It is not only tax evaders that get in trouble with the IRS, though they have a rougher time of it. Anyone of a number of unintended oversights can put you on an audit list or set you up for fees and penalties. If you miss a deadline, omitted information, or claim an undue deduction can have unintended consequences. Regardless of how innocent they might be on your part. It is your responsibility to be aware of the tax laws no matter how confusing or bewildering they might be. The IRS or a representative/auditor will not give you the benefit of the doubt when it comes to fees, penalties, or interests owed on mistakes.

Having a good financial advisor on your side can make all the difference when allocating and claiming deductions or avoiding tax pitfalls or mistakes. A tax expert can help understand how deductions apply to you, tips on how you can keep a larger portion of your money, or even give you new insight on how to avoid problems down the line. Your tax professional has a deep understanding of the tax laws and regulations and he/she can help you structure your financial affairs so as to make the most of your tax situation.

One of the best things the IRS has done recently is to get rid of the need for a second extension filing. It used to be, that you would file for an extension by April 15 and then you would have to file for a second extension August 15. Since 2006 you only have to file one extension and that’s good till October 15, now if they could only do something about the penalties, fees, and interest for filing an extension.

IRS examiners focus on certain behaviors for possible tax fraud:

  • Failure to report considerable amounts of income.
  • The claim of phony or erroneous deductions.
  • Accounting indiscretions or failure to keep reasonable financial records.
  • Questionable allotment of income to a related taxpayer in a lower tax bracket.
